Atlanta’s favorite New Year’s Eve celebration is close to making it’s official return to the Peach State following the news that the Atlanta City Council approved a $650,000 agreement with Live Nation Entertainment, according to 11Alive.
The money will reportedly go toward the desired production needs to stage the popular event at Underground Atlanta and will be able to pair the New Year’s Eve countdown with concerts featuring nationally known artists.
The event has attracted over 50,000 people and is widely known as the most popular New Year’s Eve celebration in the Southeast region of the country.
The 800-pound peach falls from a 138-foot tower to help count down to a new year, similar to how the ball drops to ring in the New Year in Times Square each year, however the Peach Drop was canceled in 2019 due to venue issues and then was pushed aside in 2020 and beyond due to ongoing issues from the coronavirus pandemic.
The iconic event did make a comeback in 2022 to welcome in 2023 at Underground in Atlanta, but it was short lived as the Peach Drop returned to it’s hiatus in 2023 after Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens’ office made the decision to shelve the event due to other events and commemorations that were held during the year that required resources.
